Overview

Challenge

Producing a period movie set in the 1990s in modern-day New York City posed several logistical hurdles, including the challenge of making the bustling, modern metropolis look like it was stuck in the past. The production required transforming streets and subways to fit the period while managing a large international crew, which included minors, all within the constraints of a tight budget influenced by currency exchange rates.

Approach

MultiVision Creative took the reins of pre-production and logistics, overseeing the entire New York City portion of the shoot for the Czech feature film IWBMD. From location scouting and permits to equipment procurement and talent casting, every detail was carefully managed to recreate the 90s aesthetic. Despite unpredictable weather, last-minute issues, and the demands of a large cast, including 12 teenage girls, the production was kept on track.

Location Scouting and Securing Iconic NYC Spots

To match the film’s 90s setting, the team scouted and secured several iconic NYC locations, including Central Park, the West Village, and Queensborough Plaza subway platform for a crucial golden hour sunset shoot. Locations like a men’s clothing shop and a church were also negotiated to meet the film’s specific needs.

Permitting and Traffic Control

Given New York City’s constant activity, securing permits was a top priority. The team blocked parking spaces to prevent modern cars from appearing in shots and arranged traffic and pedestrian control to ensure safe and uninterrupted filming.

Talent and Cast Management

Managing a cast of over 50 Czech nationals, including teenage girls, required careful planning. The team arranged accommodations, catered to dietary needs, and maintained strict schedules, all while ensuring that extras were readily available even if some didn’t show up.

Overcoming Challenges

From last-minute costume adjustments to dealing with weather issues, the production faced several unexpected hurdles. Whether it was acquiring 90s-era props, finding shoes for an actor at 8 am before stores opened, or managing sunset shots on a cloudy day, the team quickly adapted to ensure the shoot went smoothly.
